Bill inspired by 'Ape,' the police dog killed in Herkimer, passes State Senate

Lawmakers in New York State are considering a bill that would make killing or injuring a police dog a felony.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Lawmakers in New York State are considering a bill that would make killing or injuring a police dog a felony.

The bill was inspired by an "Ape," an FBI dog that was killed during a standoff with a suspect accused of killing four people and wounding two others in Herkimer County earlier this month.

Part of the bill says that the loss or injury to a police dog is not only a loss to police, but also to the citizens of New York.

George Maziarz (R-62nd District) sponsored the bill, which was passed by the New York Senate on Monday.

The bill now heads to the Assembly where it’s expected to pass.
