Boilermaker golf tournament in Utica rescheduled due to conditions

The Boilermaker annual golf tournament at Valley View Golf Club originally scheduled for Tuesday has been rescheduled due to recent weather.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV/WUTR-TV) - The Boilermaker annual golf tournament at Valley View Golf Club originally scheduled for Tuesday has been rescheduled due to recent weather.

There have been concerns the Boilermaker Race will be cancelled due to weather, but Boilermaker Executive Director Tim Reed says event organizers are not too concerned about rain or flooding.

"If we have rain it’ll be the first time in 36 years so people will be a little part of history,” explained Tim Reed. "We haven’t got a flood contingency plan per say, we have the ability to shut down roads in fact if we have to.”

While the race may still be on, the golf tournament must be rescheduled.

"The course is underwater at a lot of the holes and we got blasted again last night. It was touch and go for tomorrow but after last night we just cannot have the tournament," said Valley View General Manager Dominic Longo.

More than an inconvenience for golfers, rescheduling the tournament will have a negative economic impact for Utica.

"Usually, we have anywhere from 180 to 200 golfers so that’s a lot of money for not just us but restaurants and hotels,” explained Longo.

As for Valley View, the course has had rain nearly 60 of the 85 days it has been open. Longo says it’s hurting their business and it’s hurting the fun of the game.

Regardless of weather, Boilermaker coordinators say the race will take place on Sunday.
