Cancer survival rates expected to increase by 4M by 2022

(CNN/WSYR-TV) -- There are nearly 14 million cancer survivors in the United States, and according to the American Association for Cancer Research, that number is expected to rise to 18 million by 2022.

But the second Annual Report on Cancer Survivorship shows survival rates are not the same across different types of cancer.

The chief of oncology at Emory University in Atlanta discussed whether some cancers were more curable than others.

“Things like breast and prostate now, there's many people who are cured and living with disease. Yet on the other hand, I had had neck cancer, it was an HPV virus that caused my tumor, and those are, because of the HPV, more curable. But then you look at tumors like pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, that we still are doing very poorly with…We're gaining on many of these things here, but there are still a lot of cancers that we're not doing very well at,” explained Dr. Charles Staley, Chief of Surgical Oncology, Emory University.

"The best and latest findings in all major areas of cancer research" will come together at the American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting.

The meeting begins next Saturday, April 6, in Washington.
