Cast and Crew of ‘Wicked’ enjoying their time in Syracuse

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The hit musical “Wicked” is no in its second week at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse and show management says the performances have gone off without a hitch.

A year and a half of renovations completed last November made it possible for the Landmark to hold the traveling Broadway show.

“Wicked” travels to each show with 11 semi-trucks worth of equipment.

“We've managed to put 11 trucks full of costumes, lights, sound, we bring in our own floor, tons of hanging pieces, and they all fit back stage in this theater,” explained "Wicked" Company Manager Erica Norgaard.

The crew not only travels with all that equipment, but there are also 30 cast members and a 45-member crew backstage. The show also hires an additional 30 additional people for every show.

People and parts that wouldn't fit before Landmark Theater's $16-million renovation, which doubled the size of backstage and now allows for 78 over-sized props, including scenery and curtains to be lowered from the ceiling.

“We're excited they can fit their sets in, that there's room for casts, we have more electricity to use and more gorgeous dressing rooms, so really, we're seeing a true test of what our theater can now do with the renovations by having Wicked here,” explained Landmark Theatre’s Development Director Mary Kate Hartmann.

The Landmark now seats more people, too. The theater can seat 2,900 people. Wicked has nearly sold out a few nights so far.

Along with the accommodations, Norgaard says Landmark's 1920's glamor lends itself to the musical by setting the magical, majestic tone for Wicked.

And while many of us enjoy having “Wicked” here in Syracuse, the cast and crews says they enjoy being here, too. They say they’ll be spending the night enjoying the sights and driving through Lights on the Lake.
