Cayuga County soldier’s remains return home

The remains of a Central New York soldier slain in Afghanistan returned home on Tuesday.
Meridian (WSYR-TV) – The remains of a Central New York soldier slain in Afghanistan returned home on Tuesday.

28-year-old Staff Sgt. Francis Gene Phillips was killed while serving in southern Afghanistan.

The procession accompanying his remains back to Cayuga County began at Hancock International Airport around 4 p.m.

A motorcycle contingent of the Patriot Guard accompanied Phillips on his way to Auburn, where he was to be buried.

His family arrived in the Cayuga County community of Meridian in 2003. Phillips was born in Oakland, Calif., and he grew up in Northern California.

He joined the Army in 2005 and was serving in his second tour of duty.

He served in Iraq before being deployed to Afghanistan.
