Central New Yorkers gather at Oncenter to celebrate newly united families

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Friday was an emotional day for new families across the country as new bonds were formed through finalized adoptions.

In Syracuse, hundreds of families celebrated new beginnings on National Adoption Day at the Oncenter.

Young Maddison is nothing short of a miracle for Michael and Heidi Perkins who, for years, have tried to have a second child.

"We tried so hard to get another child and just to have her, it feels like our family is complete,” Michael Perkins said.

The Perkins’ never knew that completion would come from halfway around the world. 17-month-old Maddison is from Russia. Her mother gave her up for adoption because she couldn’t afford to care for another child.

“For us, it kind of felt like a miracle, she was the first child we looked for in Russia and she was the first one we saw and it was like love at first sight with her,” Heidi Perkins said.

Now, after months of paperwork and short visits, the Perkins family is officially complete.

“It just feels great. I was tearing up when we were doing the pledge of allegiance,” said Heidi Perkins. “It’s just so emotional, it’s wonderful.”

Similar emotions were found from just about every family who attended National Adoption Day.

This day symbolizes hope for so many children. For little Ethan, Friday’s adoption reunited him with his older brother and sister.

Jamie and Adam Newton adopted three-year-old Ethan to keep him with his two siblings.

“We weren’t sure how big of a family we wanted and how far we wanted to go, but we didn’t want them not to have their brother in their lives, so he’s here and he’s a member of our family now,” Adam said.

If you’re interested in adoption there’s an adoption information open house Saturday morning at the First Presbyterian Church on Tulip Street in Liverpool at 9 a.m. For more information call Barbara Monahan at 315-703-8738 or email her at bmonahan@hillside.com.
