Child-Identity theft on the rise in New York

The governor’s office is warning people as a growing trend in child-identity theft is spreading through New York.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – The governor’s office is warning people as a growing trend in child-identity theft is spreading through New York.

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection says victims of child-identity theft may not even know their identity has been stolen until they apply for a loan, a credit card or rent their first apartment.

Scammers can steal a child's identity by using the child's personal information and social security number.

After they obtain the information, they can sign up for credit cards and make purchases, leaving the child with a damaged credit report that can go undetected for years.

Parents are encouraged to double-check their child's credit.

You can receive a free copy of your child’s credit report here.
