Child playing with lighter started Oswego fire that killed three-year-old, police say

Police say a child playing with a lighter started the fire at an Oswego home that killed a three-year-old boy on Saturday.

Oswego (WSYR-TV) – Police say a child playing with a lighter started the fire at an Oswego home that killed a three-year-old boy on Saturday.

The fire started about 8:45 p.m. at a home at 70 West Mohawk Street between West 5th Street and West 6th Street.

Oswego City firefighters went into the home and found three-year-old Jeremiah Haskins in a second floor bedroom. He was rushed to Oswego Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Three other children and a mother were not hurt, according to fire officials.

The initial investigation found that a child playing with a lighter inadvertently set the fire, according to police and fire officials.

No charges will be filed due to the child’s age.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
