Community's efforts to rebuild couple's home nearly complete

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Peter King and Ann O’Connor have dedicated their lives to helping others. This past summer they lost their Syracuse home in a fire. Since then, the community has overwhelmingly stepped up to help them rebuild.

And there’s just one more phase of the project before the couple can move back in.

Thanks to hard work and a number of volunteers, the home is no longer a charred shell.

"It's a startling image, to see that fire damage and then see what's been done since then…we're pretty joyful of the outcome so far,” Peter told NewsChannel 9.

Peter and his wife Ann did not have insurance, but they do have a strong faith and found a wealth of support in the community they have always served. They’ve already raised more than $70,000.

"The response has been so wonderful in terms of getting the house, and services and time and money - getting the house ready to go back to,” Ann said.

The exterior of the house is done, that was phase one, but now they need to start on the inside and they still need donations.

“We feel there is a joint partnership between us and the community that continues and we're very happy with that,” Ann continued.

The couple has run the Unity Kitchen Community of the Catholic Worker for decades, serving family-style meals for the less fortunate. It runs solely on individual and church donations. That kindness they have always offered to others is now coming back their way.

“We knew that the Lord would take care of us, one way or the other we would be alright, and taken care of and of course that's true,” said Peter.

The couple is expected to back in their home by Easter.

Catholic Charities is helping to put the Kings up in an apartment until they can move back into their home. If you’d like to help, call the Unity Kitchen Community at 315-478-5552.
