Discount Shoe Repair continues tradition of repairing shoes for those in need

While you’re getting ready to do your shopping the next few days, take a minute to look in your closet for some shoes or boots not being used anymore.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – While you’re getting ready to do your shopping the next few days, take a minute to look in your closet for some shoes or boots not being used anymore.

Ralph Rotella at Discount Shoe Repair will take them, fix them up, and make sure they end up with people who could really use them.

This time of year, the shoe man says he’s in on Saturdays and Sundays just to take care of the shoe drive – you’d have to when you’re trying to collect 3,000 pairs of footwear.

Rotella has held such drives for four years – and started with 65 pairs the first year.

"I still can't believe how many donations we get. I'm speechless, so many nice people donate so many shoes,” Rotella said.

He’s closing in on his goal of 3,000 but says that, now, with a couple of weeks remaining, he’d like to surpass the goal.

"This guy bought brand new shoes, he never wore them before so he donated four or five pair like that,” Rotella said.

The Syracuse Crunch are getting in on the drive and helping out Ralph. At this Friday night’s game, the team will be accepting shoe donations. There will be boxes at both entrances for fans to donate.

Of course you can always drop them off at Discount Shoe Repair on East Washington Street in Syracuse – or call them to arrange for a pickup.

The store can be reached by calling (315) 472-0976.
