DA: We will only pursue life without parole in David Renz case

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Cicero man was indicted Wednesday on murder and criminal sex charges connected to a brutal rape and murder incident that occurred in the town of Clay in March.

District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick said that his office will only seek a sentence of life without the possibility of parole in the case of David Renz.

Renz, 29, of Lakeshore Road in Cicero, was arrested on rape and murder charges on March 14 after Liverpool school district librarian Lori Bresnahan was found with multiple stab wounds on Verplank Road. She died of her injuries at Upstate University Hospital.

A 10-year-old child was found by a passerby. The DA’s office has declined to identify the child, referring to her only as “Jane Doe.”

Investigators say he used an air pistol to kidnap the woman and child as they were leaving a gymnastics center at Great Northern Mall and then drove to an isolated parking lot where he sexually assaulted the child.

After he drove to Verplank Road, Renz tried to tie Bresnahan’s head to a seat, but she screamed, telling the child to run away.

Fitzpatrick said that Bresnahan kept Renz preoccupied during the incident, enabling the child to escape. They say Renz then stabbed her.

“Lori died really saving Jane Doe,” Fitzpatrick said. “There’s no question that she attempted to distract Renz so that little Jane could get away.”

On Wednesday, the Onondaga County District Attorney’s office announced that it had unsealed a 37-count indictment that included murder, rape, and numerous criminal sex charges.

State Police say Renz had fled into a wooded area before they located him.

They say he was found with the child’s blood on him, and also the keys to the vehicle.

He was charged with rape, kidnapping, murder in the first degree, and murder in the second degree.

Renz was facing Federal child pornography charges when the incident occurred. Investigators say he was able to neutralize the monitoring bracelet he was wearing as a condition of his pre-trial release agreement.

Fitzpatrick said that child pornography was discovered during the police investigation that followed Renz’s arrest on the murder charge.

He said they intend to include the material as evidence. Fitzpatrick said his office believes the material “mirrors” the act Renz has been accused of perpetrating.
