Doctors say holidays are a good time to talk about death

It may not be the most pleasant conversation, but it may be one of the most important. Doctors say this is a good time of the year to talk to your loved ones about death.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV/ABC News) - It may not be the most pleasant conversation, but it may be one of the most important. Doctors say this is a good time of the year to talk to your loved ones about death.

A study suggests preparing for death is something Americans are not good at.

New research shows only 1 in 4 Americans have completed an "advanced directive," a document that lists our end-of-life preferences, should critical illness strike.

It may be a touchy subject, but not having an advance directive can leave your family deep in debt, since health care costs are often greatest during your final years.

Doctors recommend tackling the subject head-on.

Schedule a meeting while everyone's in town for the holidays and prepare yourself to talk - and listen.

It is one step you can take to protect your family and make sure the last days happen the way you want them to.
