Driver chased and charged with DWI after ignoring sobriety checkpoint

A Syracuse man ended his travels on the thruway with flat tires and a DWI charge.

Phelps (WSYR-TV) - A Syracuse man ended his travels on the thruway with flat tires and a DWI charge.

According to New York State Police, 38-year old John C. Walker drove a Toyota Camry through a sobriety checkpoint early Saturday morning at the Geneva exit in the Town of Phelps.

Troopers attempted to pull Walker over, but say he refused to stop. Spike strips were placed across the thruway, allowing troopers to deploy the spikes just before Walker approached, instantly flattening the tires on the Camry.

Walker was arrested and charged with Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer, Reckless Endangerment, Reckless Driving, Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test, Failure to Obey a Police Officer, Speeding, and Failure to Stop at Stop Sign.

He was arraigned in the Town of Brutus court and sent to Cayuga County Jail.
