Eco-friendly company in CNY may close if it can't get funding or a buyer by Friday

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - A hidden gem tucked away in the community of Sherrill continues to make a difference in Central New York.

Aqua Vita Farms is touted as a place that's changing the world from the Mohawk Valley.

Owner Mark Doherty says to think of the company as an indoor eco-system.

“It's a system where we feed the fish, the fish feed the plants and the plants clean the water. The result is all natural, pesticide-free produce that we're capable of growing closer to the user year-round,” explained Mark Doherty.

Aqua Vita Farms opened back in 2011 and since its inception, Doherty has used fish farming to naturally cultivate things like basil, lettuce and seafood for area eateries.

But just two years after opening, the business is now on the brink of closing its doors for good if they don't get the funding they need.

“We weren't able to go cash flow positive quickly enough. We ran out of capitol, typical start up scenario, great idea, great product, greatly received in the marketplace and the community, we just didn't survive that start up phase capitol-wise,” explained Doherty.

A closure could be devastating to an area that's already struggling with a produce shortage.

“We got farmers who can't get crops in the ground, who won't be able to get crops out of the ground because of rain and flooding so it’s no longer a time where we can bury our head in the sand and say this isn't happening,” Doherty said.

That's why he's working around the clock to find a buyer or investor by the end of the week in hopes of keeping the business alive.

“There's no better place in the world to change the planet than right here, there just isn't, and it’s critically important that the technology continue and the technology flourish,” Doherty said.

Aqua Vita Farms has been in talks with two potential buyers and an investor that could help them keep the business running.

They have until the end of the week to get the funding they need to either keep the business in Sherrill or move it to a location chosen by the buyers.
