Two killed in crash involving cars, school bus in Montezuma

Two people are dead after an accident on State Route 90 and Salt Block Road in Montezuma late Monday afternoon.
Montezuma (WSYR-TV) -- Two people are dead after an accident on State Route 90 near Salt Block Road in the town of Montezuma late Monday afternoon, according to Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould.

The crash, which involved a Seneca Falls Central School District school bus and two other vehicles, happened just before 6 p.m.

An investigation revealed that the school bus and another car were headed south on State Route 90, when a car traveling northbound crossed the center line, hit the driver’s side of the bus and then struck the car trailing the bus head on, Sheriff Gould explained.

School Superintendent Robert McKeveny says the bus was carrying the high school wrestling team back from a meet in Port Byron when the crash happened.

Fifteen students and three adults were on bus at the time of the accident. Sheriff Gould says one student was taken to Geneva Hospital with minor injuries.

One person from each car was killed in the crash, Sheriff Gould told NewsChannel 9. Two other people were airlifted to Upstate University Hospital where their conditions are not yet known.

An accident investigation team is on the scene and will likely be for most of the night between Hamlet of Montezuma and Freebridge. State Route 90 will be closed for as long as they’re out there.
