Empire Brewing customers now able to pay by smart phone

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- More and more, people are using their smart phones to do just about anything, except make phone calls. A Cortland company is teaming up with a popular Armory Square restaurant to launch the next enhancement to your dining experience.

When you go out to eat, you expect to do some waiting, but when it comes to your bill, sometimes you just want to pay and go. Express Pay from Systems East in Cortland is making that possible. Now, when you get your bill at Empire Brewing, all you have to do is scan the QR code listed on the bill, follow a few simple steps and your bill is paid.

"If you're working a six, seven, eight table section, and someone really needs to go, it can take a few minutes to get that check, but they've really got to hustle back so their boss isn't mad, so having them be able to do that saves them time and also saves us a little bit of time,” said Empire Brewing server Amanda Spear.

"They can pay for it in the privacy of their own phone, they can choose whatever credit card they want. That information is not known to the dining staff, it goes straight to their point of sale system and the transaction is paid,” explained Dick Scheutzow with Systems East, Inc.

The customer now has control of the bill paying process. Your credit card never leaves your hand and a receipt is immediately sent to your phone. The restaurant gets a copy, too.

Scheutzow says there’s another important security feature of Express Pay.

“Also, for the restaurants there are patrons that contest these bills, they aren't certain that's in fact what they authorized so that takes care of both ends of that concern,” Scheutzow explained.

For businesses there's no investment in technology necessary -- nothing you physically have to buy. A customer's phone is the only piece of hardware you need for Express Pay.

With phones as common at the table as silverware these days, using it to pay your dining bill shouldn’t be hard to do.

Systems East has been testing Express Pay with Empire Brewing, but is now ready to take it to market. The company is working hard to get it into more restaurants.
