Seaside Park, NJ (CNN/WSYR-TV) - A massive fire that sent black smoke above Seaside Park, NJ, is under control.

Thursday afternoon, hundreds of firefighters swarmed the Boardwalk – just one year after Hurricane Sandy destroyed it.

The fire burned through at least 20 businesses, leaving damage over six blocks.

Several firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.

Investigators are looking into reports that the fire may have started at a frozen custard stand and then quickly escalated.

Seaside Park gained national attention after Hurricane Sandy tore thorugh it, costing the city $8 million just to rebuild the Boardwalk.

Governor Chris Christie touted his state’s resiliency.

"This is us, soon as this is over, we'll pick ourselves up, we'll dust ourselves off, and we'll get back to work,” he said.
