FORT DRUM, NY (WSYR-TV) - New York State Police arrested a Fort Drum soldier for stealing a car, driving drunk and vandalism.

27-year-old Daniel J. Longnecker, of 10863A Omaha St, is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Grand Larceny and multiple charges of Criminal Mischief.

On Saturday, Longnecker allegedly stole a 2009 Mercury Mariner from Utah Street on Fort Drum. State Police said he was then involved in several hit and run crashes on post.

With the stolen vehicle now damaged, Longnecker drove to Allen’s Budget Motel on State Route 342 in the Town of Pamelia where he abandoned it.

He then smashed the rear window of a 2004 Subaru Legacy which was parked at the motel. Longnecker entered the Subaru and caused more damage to the gear shift by forcing the vehicle from park.

Longnecker fled into a wooded area just before police arrived at Allen’s Motel.

After he exited the woods a short distance away, police said Longnecker broke off the door handle to a nearby home on State Route 37. Longnecker was unable to get into that home.

As State Troopers and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies continued to search the area, Longnecker was eventually found damaging two more vehicles in the parking lot of the State Police barracks on State Route 37.

Longnecker again attempted to flee but was taken into custody by police after a brief foot pursuit.

Longnecker was arraigned in Town of Leray Court and remanded to the Jefferson County Public Safety Building in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.
Additional vehicle and traffic charges are expected.

Longnecker also faces charges on Fort Drum relative to his driving prior to leaving post.
The NY State Police were assisted by The Jefferson County Sheriffs Department, Fort Drum Military Police and the Evans Mills Ambulance Squad.
