Freezing rain & wind Monday AM

(Sunday Night February 10, 2013) Winds pick up through the overnight and rain showers arrive in time for the AM commute. With temperatures hovering near 32°, some may experience freezing rain while heading to school or work. Read on to find out who is most at risk.
Our focus is on a storm system exiting the Northern Plains and entering the Midwest overnight. Low pressure has already brought blizzard-like conditions to South Dakota, with its extending cold front firing up severe weather and tornadoes in the Deep South. As the system advances towards Central New York, we will experience active weather of a different kind.

Freezing rain advisories are in effect for nearly all of CNY through early Monday afternoon. However, the threat for slippery road conditions is higher for those who are south of Syracuse. The Southern Finger Lakes will likely have temperatures at or below freezing during the morning commute, along with those who are south of Rte. 20 in Onondaga, Cortland, and Madison, and Chenango Counties. This is where the greatest risk for freezing rain will be. In addition to the aforementioned areas, the Tug Hill will likely be at or below the 32° mark and may experience freezing rain as well. As for those in the immediate Syracuse area and north of the Thruway, the threat for freezing rain still exists; it’s just not quite as high.

Another concern for Monday is wind. Gusts will be coming out of the south/southwest upwards of 30mph. Blustery conditions will persist through the afternoon. The upside to these winds is that they will be importing milder air, lifting the thermometer reading into the mid 40s by the afternoon. Because of the introduction of warmer temps, the shot at freezing rain will be confined mainly to the morning hours.

The cold front should drag through the area Monday evening, bringing a return of cooler temperatures. This should change any rain back to a wintry mix and finally to snow through the overnight. Westerly winds align over Lake Ontario, and those who are east/southeast of the lake can expect enhanced snow showers through Tuesday. A few snow showers will still be possible for Wednesday as well.
