Government Shutdown hampers CDC's ability to track outbreaks

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – New York is not among the states impacted by a recent salmonella outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control, but health officials warn that the Federal government shutdown could hamper their efforts to combat outbreaks in general.

The CDC says that with more than two thirds of its staff cut by furloughs, they lack the personnel to find outbreaks and stop them.

The agency brought back employees to help with a salmonella outbreak that primarily impacted western states, but future threats may be more challenging to contend with.

"When you have that many people on furlough, you can't keep up the communication side – the messages they give out to the public can actually save lives,” said Dr. Richard Besser.

Doctors say this outbreak is sending more people to the hospital than usual.

Making sure that chicken is fully cooked is one way to prevent salmonella poisoning.

More information on salmonella is available on the CDC’s website.
