Helping Clay family after home destroyed by fire

Clay (WSYR-TV) - A family of nine is trying to find a place where they can all live together after a fire destroyed their house on Joewood Drive in Clay on Wednesday.

Friends of the Kazlman and Schuart family are asking for donations to help the children so the family can focus on finding a new home. The kids range in age from 6 to 19.

Every family member made it out of the fire safely thanks to the 14-year-old son who doubled back to help his younger sister out the window. The family lost a cat, two dogs, and nearly all of their belongings in the fire.

"They don't have clothes, furniture, or anything like that," said Summer Duncan, a longtime friend of the family. “They're basically starting completely from scratch."

Duncan said the family has not been able to go through the house to see if anything is salvageable, but it doesn't look promising.

"We have nothing," said Jennifer Kazlman, the mother. "They didn't even have shoes, jackets, or anything like that."

The seven kids lost their uniforms and equipment for baseball, cheerleading, color guard and swimming. The electronics one son used to run his own radio station and the nebulizer for one son with asthma was all lost in the fire as well.

"They're great people. They're good kids. They're a tight family and they've lost everything. You hate to see people lose everything," said Duncan.

The kids are staying with different family members as their family searches for a new home that can accommodate the nine of them.

"The kids are really doing good. They're shaken up from losing everything. Everybody is, they're just happy they all have each other," said Duncan.

With the community's help, the family hopes to be back together soon.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
