‘High risk’ for wildfires; burn ban in effect through May 14

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The warm weather and lack of rain is fueling a reminder from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) that a burn ban remains in effect.

Right now is considered a “high risk” time for wildfires and with the start of prom season and the weather warming up, folks are heading out to go camping.

The DEC is cautioning all New Yorkers that residential brush burning is prohibited through May 14.

Anyone who violates the ban could face a minimum of a $500 fine for the first offense.
