Universal City, Calf. (WSYR-TV) – NBC has announced that Jay Leno will step down as host of The Tonight Show next spring.

Jimmy Fallon, who currently follows Leno each night as host of Late Night, will take over as host of Tonight, the network said in a statement.

In the statement from NBC, Leno said, “Congratulations Jimmy. I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy. If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.”

Fallon said in the statement, “I’m really excited to host a show that starts today instead of tomorrow.”

Leno began hosting Tonight in 1992 after taking over from Johnny Carson and has hosted even since, except for a year when NBC gave the show to Conan O’Brien.

NBC has not announced plans for who will take over for Jimmy Fallon on Late Night.
