Ithaca officials trying to determine who dumped significant amount of chemicals into sewer system

Officials in Ithaca are trying to determine who poured a significant amount of chemicals into the public sanitary sewer system.
Ithaca (WSYR-TV) - Officials in Ithaca are trying to determine who poured a significant amount of chemicals into the public sanitary sewer system.

The unknown cleaning solution, solvent or other chemical is believed to have entered the system when someone poured them down a building drain or a manhole cover sometime on Nov. 23 or Nov. 24, according to officials.

The system serves both Ithaca and Dryden.

The chemicals are toxic to the microbes that help treat the water.

Judging from the level of disruption, city officials say the quantity discharged is likely to have been significant, far more than what would normally be found in a residence.

It’s not known if the chemical dumping was intentional or an accident.

If you have any information about the incident, you are urged to call the city of Ithaca at (607) 273-8381.
