Man with lengthy criminal past arrested in West Onondaga St. homicide

Police have arrested a man convicted in the past on multiple felony charges for killing a Syracuse man on New Year's Eve.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Police have arrested a man convicted in the past on multiple felony charges for killing a Syracuse man on New Year's Eve.

Police say 34-year-old Fred Burgess, Jr., of Mains Avenue, was trying to rob 30-year-old David Jones while he sat in an SUV on West Onondaga Street at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday night when a struggle broke out.

According to police, Burgess shot Jones when he tried to drive off.

Burgess was charged with first degree murder, first degree attempted robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police say they have no reason to believe that Jones was doing anything illegal at the time of his death.

Police say witnesses helped them find Burgess. They are still collecting information on the suspect and are asking anyone who has more information to call them at (315) 442-5222.
