Mattydale (WSYR-TV) - A few weeks ago, we introduced you to Owin, a Mattydale boy struggling with cystic fibrosis.

His mother was fighting with the Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield for coverage of a critical treatment, his physical therapy, or PT, vest.

Cystic Fibrosis has a big impact on Owin's lungs. To help, he wears the vest twice a day which vibrates his body to break up the mucus in his lungs so he is able to breathe.

Perry has just learned the vest will now be covered. The change in the insurance company’s decision was made in part, she says, because of help from Congressman Dan Maffei.  He got involved after seeing the story on NewsChannel 9.

“You see a child like Owin and you just want to make sure the best care is available and we knew that it should be and if there was something I could do I was going to,” Maffei said.

Karee Perry said, “It's a lot harder than I ever expected and the fact that we won the appeal is just a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Perry says she’s also lifted by overwhelming support from the community.
