Oswego (WSYR-TV) -- Outdoor sports are an $8 billion industry in New York and the state is hoping to boost that revenue.

Governor Cuomo wants to reduce fees for fishing and hunting licenses across the board in an effort to lure in business.

Ben Franklin fishes year round in Central New York and soon it could cost him less.

"The lower the better, especially now, everyone wants prices lower than what they are,” Franklin told NewsChannel 9.

New York is looking to cut its hunting and fishing license fees. Out-of-state residents would see the biggest savings. Some licenses could drop by $100. The fishing license could drop from $79 to $50. And come fall, when the river is stocked with salmon, Pulaski sees a lot of tourists.

Fishing is a big industry Oswego County. They sell thousands of licenses a year at Fat Nancy’s. Those sales also increase foot traffic by bringing people in the door.

“We sell the licenses, but for our business to survive, we need people to buy other things, so maybe they'll have more money to spend,” said Rob Ripka with Fat Nancy’s.

The proposed changes could also give you more for your money, instead of only lasting through the season, your license would last for 12 months from the day you bought it. The hope is to lure anglers and hunters back a few times a year.
