New OCC President gets right to work on first day

Monday marked the first official day for Dr. Casey Crabill as President of Onondaga Community College.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Monday marked the first official day for Dr. Casey Crabill as President of Onondaga Community College.

The new president wasted little time getting to work, observing the campus to see where people work and how everything fits together in the overall plan.

"The learning curve for me is always about people. What do they do, how do they do it and how can I help them do it in a way that supports students success," Dr. Crabill said.

Dr. Crabill says she hopes to help the students of OCC do three things: Commit, complete and compete.

To ensure her goals are met, Dr. Crabill wants to figure out what services the school provides to students to get them from enrollment to graduation.

"When the students come back in September, that will give me an opportunity to really interact with faculty to understand the strengths of our curriculum that are really well known, but where do they need my help, where are places we want to develop together," Dr. Crabill said.

One area Dr. Crabill says she'd like to see greatly increased is the number of students in the service learning program, where students take classroom experience and apply it to the non-profit world.

"This is an amazing institution and I'm not sure it’s well understood outside the walls of the college exactly, the brain power and the energy that exists here. Part of what I want to do also is make sure Onondaga County, the people who live here understand the incredible resource they have here. This is their community college," Dr. Crabill said.

According to Dr. Crabill, there will not be seismic shifts, but tweaks to make what she believes is the best community college in the state, even better.

Dr. Crabill says she plans to have measurements in place to gauge the success of the college that will be shared with the community.
