New Process Gear workers finish final shift

After more than 120 years, production ceased at New Process Gear on Thursday.
DeWitt (WSYR-TV) – After more than 120 years, production ceased at New Process Gear on Thursday.

“It’s all done. It’s over. It’s not just for me, it’s everybody else. We’ve all done the same, put in a lot of years, and they are getting nothing for it,” said former Magna employee Mark Cole.

For more than two decades, Cole and his co-workers have gone to McShane’s to unwind after putting in long hours at the facility.

Joanna Jankowski worked for the company for 19 years. Thursday’s goodbyes were bittersweet for her.

“We’ve exchanged so many stories. We’ve grown up together. We all got hired young. We had children together and grandchildren together and this is the kind of place you exchange those stories,” she said.

For Heidi Doran, the stories span nearly 30 years. She organized a farewell party to give back to those who have been an integral part of her own career.

“I’ve seen it all the past 23 years,” she said. “It’s really sad the industry in Syracuse is leaving.”
