Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – President Obama will consider letting the United Nations control and destroy Syrian chemical weapons.

The idea was presented to the White House on Monday as Russia's foreign minister promised to push Syrian leaders to agree to the plan.

The move could prevent U.S. air strikes against Syria.

President Obama called it a modestly positive development but said the threat of military action needs to stay on the table.

“I don't think that we would have gotten to this point unless we had maintained a credible possibility of a military strike,” the president said in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer.

President Obama seemed to rule out any Syrian retaliation during his interview

“Assad's capabilities are not significant compared to ours. They're significant compared to an opposition that are not professional fighters,” President Obama said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he's postponing the vote to authorize a strike that was planned for Wednesday.

The move gives President Obama more time to lobby lawmakers to support his plans, but also allows more time for a diplomatic solution.

“I think there will be time during the course of the debates here in the United States for the international community, the Russians, the Syrians to see if we can resolve this,” Obama said.

The president will address the nation about the crisis in Syria on Tuesday at 9 p.m. You can watch his speech on NewsChannel 9.
