Outdoor workers cope with the cold

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Many of us are trying to limit our time outdoors, as temperatures dip below freezing. But what if you had to work outside for eight hours?

It’s a tough part of the job for mail carriers in Central New York, but someone’s got to do it.

It’s easy for most of us to complain a little when it gets this cold out, but regardless of how cold it is, you won’t hear one bad thing about the weather from Mail Carrier Frank Deroma. He tells us he prefers working in the winter.

Deroma has been a mail carrier for 26 years.

“When you get a few days in the single digits, it starts getting to you, but a few days here and there isn’t really anything,” Deroma told NewsChannel 9.

He says he dresses in lots of layers and tall boots before setting out on his eight-hour route.

With almost 500 deliveries, Deroma says the key is to keep moving.

The snow just makes the job a little harder, which is why it’s even ore important for homeowners to shovel their sidewalks and their walkways.

A lot of mail carriers also put special traction on their shoes to keep them on their feet as they trek through the slippery snow.
