Police: Small explosion at Wegmans in Ithaca leaves 2 with minor injuries

Ithaca Police say a small explosion in a can recycling machine at a Wegmans in Ithaca has left two people injured.

Ithaca (WSYR-TV) – Ithaca Police say a small explosion in a can recycling machine at a Wegmans in Ithaca has left two people injured.

Police responded at about 5:50 p.m. and say two adults were injured as the result of an explosion inside of a can recycling machine that they were operating.

The can recycling machine was located inside of the lobby of the store located at 500 South Meadow St. in Ithaca.

According to police, the small explosion was contained to the immediate area of the can recycling machine and the store did not have to close, as customers were diverted to another entrance.

Police say the two victims were transported to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries to the upper torso area and to their hands.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined, but Ithaca Police say there were no indications of a chemical or biological substance being used.
