Police remind residents that fireworks are illegal in NY and are dangerous

While they are a July 4th tradition, fireworks always spark a concern for area police, especially when Central New Yorkers attempt to light the fuse themselves.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – While they are a July 4th tradition, fireworks always spark a concern for area police, especially when Central New Yorkers attempt to light the fuse themselves.

Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputies have confiscated hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks in the last week alone. While backyard fireworks may look harmless, Detective Ray Herrick, the senior bomb squad technician for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office says looks can be deceiving.

“Last year, this type of firework - a mortar type - it goes up in the air, and someone took one to the face, causing severe physical injury,” Detective Ray Herrick said.

It is commonly believed that big fireworks are the most dangerous, but according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, it's sparklers that cause the most injury.

The CPSC says last year there were more than 1,000 emergency department-treated injuries associated with sparklers, which can get as hot as 2,000 degrees.

The parts of the body most often injured by fireworks were hands, fingers, and eyes.

Local police want to remind residents that fireworks are not safe, and are illegal in the state of New York.

Detective Herrick says this question comes up every year. Yes, even sparklers are illegal in the state of New York.
