Preparing for Valentine's Day rush

Local florists are preparing for the Valentines Day rush on Thursday.
SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - Local florists are preparing for the Valentines Day rush on Thursday.

At Markowitz Florist in Syracuse on Sunday, they were busy picking the best flowers for arrangements.

“Right now we're doing a dozen roses which is the most popular. Always has been for Valentine's,” said Owner Jini Cerio.

Cerio will send out hundreds of bouquets throughout the Syracuse area on Thursday.

“It is the largest holiday. There is none that come close to it, not even Mother's Day, at least for us,” said Cerio.

When choosing a bouquet, Cerio said not to over think it. It’s the message of love that matters most.

“All flowers go together. It doesn't matter what color it is, what shape or size it is. God's garden has it all,” said Cerio.

To keep your flowers alive longer, follow these steps:

1.  Fill up the vase with water as high as you can, as not all stems always reach the bottom.
2.  Change the water in the vase every other day.
3.  Keep flowers away from heaters or anything that heats up, like televisions.
4.  When asleep or at work, put your flowers in the refrigerator or a cool room.

Florists tell NewsChannel 9 that those steps can preserve flowers for an additional two to three weeks.
