Pyongyang (WSYR-TV/CNN) - An 85-year-old Korean War veteran detained by the North Korean government during an organized trip in October is back in California Saturday night.

Merrill Newman was "deported" yesterday according to CNN.

"Taking into consideration his admittance of the act committed by him on the basis of his wrong understanding (and the) apology made by him for it, his sincere repentance of it and his advanced age and health condition, the above-said institution deported him from the country from a humanitarian viewpoint," the Korean Central News Agency said.

Back in the U.S., Newman said, "I'm delighted to be home. I want to thank the Swedish embassy in Pyongyang and the American embassy in Beijing for all their help. It's been a great homecoming."

In October, Newman was reportedly pulled from an airplane in Pyongyang by North Korean authorities during an organized trip.

Weeks after his detainment, the KCNA released a story and video showing Newman apologizing for crimes against North Korea.
