Cairo (WSYR-TV) – More than 50 people are dead as Egyptian police and military clashed with demonstrators in Egypt less than one week after the democratically elected government was overthrown.

An Egyptian health ministry official told CNN that the death toll had climbed to 51 and that 435 people were injured when security forces confronted supporters of President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to CNN, witnesses indicated that the military fired on demonstrators as they were taking a break.

Last week, the Egyptian military overthrew the country’s government and announced that Morsi was no longer the president.
