Washington DC (WSYR-TV) – The Supreme Court has struck down one critical part of the Defense of Marriage Act, ruling that same-sex couples legally married in a state may receive Federal benefits, and also cleared the way for gay marriage in California.

CNN reported on the rulings on Wednesday morning.

The DOMA ruling applies to states – such as New York – that recognize gay marriage as legal.
