Rutgers hoops coach fired after video shows him hurling objects and anti-gay slurs at players

Piscataway (WSYR-TV) – The Rutgers University athletics department announced on Wednesday morning that coach Mike Rice has been fired.

The school relieved the coach of his duties the day after a video surfaced on ESPN’s Outside the Lines in which the coach can be seen hurling balls at players and using abusive language – including homophobic slurs.

“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of coach Rice,” said Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti in a statement on the department’s website. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and other officials in the state expressed concern about Rice's behavior as it was displayed in the video.
