SUNY Cortland enhances its mobile presence

It seems like there’s almost nothing you can’t do with your smartphone. At SUNY Cortland, that’s truer than ever before.
Cortland (WSYR-TV) -- It seems like there’s almost nothing you can’t do with your smartphone. At SUNY Cortland, that’s truer than ever before.

Doing your laundry, along with everyone else, is just part of the college life, but what if you could take some of the hassle out of it with your smartphone?

“I love the idea of being able to put the laundry machine you’re using in on the phone and having it tell you when your laundry is done. That’s amazing,” said SUNY Cortland senior DJ Johnson.

Not only that, you can even tell when other people are using them, how much longer they’ll be tied up and if any others are free.

And, if you’re wondering how busy a dining hall is, all you have to do is pull that up on your smartphone and it links to one of the web cams at the dining hall.

“Our dining halls also put all their menus online so you can see what’s for dinner that night, what’s for lunch, so you can pick as your walking through campus where you want to eat,” explained SUNY Cortland Director of Web Services Josh Peluso.

You can even track buses in real time now, follow them around campus on your phone so you’re not waiting longer than you have to for a ride, which will definitely come in handy on a wet or cold day.

There are plenty of handy academic uses on the go too.

"Faculty can communicate with their students and students can get their grades on their phones now. One of the nice features, with all the construction going on, they can actually find their classroom on the map, see where they are on campus, so they can get to their classroom,” Peluso continued.

“It’s also useful for visitors to the campus. We have maps if they just want to do their own tour. They can walk around and find things for themselves,” said Mary Kate Boland, SUNY Cortland Assistant Director of Leadership and Community Development.

“I never really thought that we would have something like this. It’s pretty amazing,” said Johnson.

It’s quite an upgrade in Johnson’s four years. One can only imagine what this year’s freshmen will have by the time they graduate.

The new mobile experience at SUNY Cortland was rolled out for faculty and staff late last month and was introduced to students last week.
