Video: School bus monitor Karen Klein talks about being bullied

Greece, NY (WSYR-TV) – The school bus monitor bullied by students in a cell phone video that went viral online is speaking out.

Karen Klein has worked for the Greece Central School District for 20 years and became a bus monitor about two years ago.

The video of Greece Athena Middle School students caught the attention of police and school district officials. (Read more about police questioning students involved.)

Klein spoke with NewsChannel 9’s sister station 13WHAM in Rochester.

Klein said the comment that hurt the most was when the kids said "you're so ugly your kid should kill themselves." Her son took his life 10 years ago.

Klein said she couldn’t hear everything students were saying at the time, and didn’t know how bad it was until she saw the video. “I didn't want to watch it,” she said.

“Sometimes you expect kids to be like they acted, but not that bad. They weren’t that bad all year,” she said.  “That one day, I don’t know what possessed them.”

When looking at the experience she went through, Klein said, “I hope that this might help other people. That’s what I really hope. To go though all this for nothing would not be satisfactory.”

“I think they should have some form of punishment,” Klein said.
