Schuyler and Yates counties consider possible merger

The Schuyler and Yates county legislatures voted Monday to apply for state funds for a study on sharing services and possibly merging.
Watkins Glen (WETM-TV/WSYR-TV) - The Schuyler and Yates county legislatures voted Monday to apply for state funds for a study on sharing services and possibly merging.

Schuyler County administrator Timothy O'Hearn said that would be unprecedented because counties in New York have never merged.

However, he says that would not be the primary focus of the study.

The study would look at sharing services, such as public works or consolidating administrative positions, but if there was enough to share or consolidate, the study could look at merging the two counties.

The application for $90,000 dollars in state funds will be submitted this week.

The local share of the cost would be $10,000

If the grant is approved, O'Hearn hopes the study process could start before the end of this year.

It would take at least a year for the study to be completed.

He says any merger would require a public referendum.
