Skaneateles mansion with unique history up for auction

SKANEATELES, NY (WSYR-TV) - A Skaneateles mansion with a brief, but unique history is up for auction. At an open house on Saturday, about 500 people stopped by to take a look inside the home at 1808 W. Lake Road.

According to
federal prosecutors, the house was paid for with drug money earned by 53-year-old Charles Blomquist, who allegedly sold cocaine and marijuana in the 1980’s.

Blomquist was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for money laundering and gave up the Skaneateles house as part of his plea deal.

Most of the people who stopped by on Saturday told NewsChannel 9 they were just curious.

“We've gone by it by boat before for years and we were just very curious,” said Shirley Eagan.

Realtors showing the unfinished house have had some trouble describing its unique layout.

“Every time we come in here we look around and just try to understand what was going on but we can't because of course we're not in their head to know what their idea was when building this house,” said Superior Property Management President Kelly Foster.

But the history of the home will not stop some serious bidders.

We spoke to one realtor representing possible buyers...

“One is looking to make it his private residence. One wants to finish it off and resell it,” said Exit First Realty President Joe Viscomi.

Viscomi said he expects the buyer to pay up to $2-million for the property and another $1.2-million to finish the inside.

The auction will be held at the property on October 2nd at noon.

Interested buyers will need to bring a $50,000 cashiers check to participate in the auction.

The starting bid will be announced that day.
