State Police looking for new recruits for a career that starts with a $50K salary

There’s an employer with locations all around the state looking to hire; who can guarantee new employees a salary of over $50,000 to start.
Oneida (WSYR-TV) – There’s an employer with locations all around the state looking to hire; who can guarantee new employees a salary of over $50,000 to start.

Online applications are now available for the upcoming New York State Trooper exam, which can be taken in the fall.

The latest Trooper class, which graduated in May, is hitting the streets and highways of New York this week.

It’s only the second class in four years and all from the 2008 exam – the last test given by the state.

Budget constraints forced the agency to put recruiting on hold.

At the same time, larger graduating classes two decades ago are coming to retirement age, leaving State Police with positions to fill and they’re eager to find the right candidates for the job.

"At this point and time, Fort Drum seems like a great place to start just because you have such a large variety of people from all over the place,” said State Police Troop D recruiting officer Xaymara Morales.

Over the years, State Police have seen about 150 retirements every year. But for a variety of reasons, they’re now seeing between 300 and 400 Troopers retire every year.

“I don't expect that we're going to have such a gap like our 2008 exam where it took almost five years for us to start getting the academies through. We anticipate to get this ball rolling to where it used to be,” Morales said.

Morales is encouraging young people to strongly consider a career as a Trooper.

Morales warns that because of the thoroughness of the hiring process, applicants can expect to wait a year between the exam and getting on the streets.
