Suicide awareness walk

More than 300 people walked to help raise awareness of suicide prevention on Saturday.
LIVERPOOL, NY (WSYR-TV) - More than 300 people walked to help raise awareness of suicide prevention on Saturday.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention held the Out of the Darkness Walk at Long Branch Park in Liverpool. Such walks were held throughout the country on Saturday.

The event aimed to stop the negative impression associated with mental illness and depression which often leads to suicide.

“People are like 'oh my goodness, I lost somebody to suicide’ or ‘I know somebody who died by suicide' so you never really know, and getting an organization like this walk together really helps people come together and heal together,” said AFSP Chairwoman Sarah Vroman.

Funds raised at the walk benefit local preventative programs and national research.

According to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, more than 3,600 people commit suicide every year.
