Sunday Commencement at CNY colleges

Commencement ceremonies were held at Le Moyne, Ithaca and Cayuga Community College on Sunday.
SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Commencement ceremonies were held at Le Moyne, Ithaca and Cayuga Community College on Sunday.

Cayuga CC’s 59th Commencement was highlighted by commencement speaker and Marine Brian Knapp. He suffered a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan after the vehicle he was in drove over an IED in 2008.

The SUNY Chancellor’s Award Recipient graduated with honors and the knowledge that he helped transform Cayuga CC into a military-friendly campus.

“Between the Veterans Working Group and the two organizations, we have been able to bring fundamental change on our campus,” Knapp said. “We have established in-state tuition for all veterans and a book deferral program, changed the deployment policy, established a Veteran Specific Orientation, and we are about to introduce a laptop loan program. I cannot express how much gratitude I have to the faculty, staff, administrators, and students who have supported me and our student veterans.”

Knapp was one of 630 graduates, including 33 graduating military veterans, recognized on Sunday.
More than 600 students graduated from Le Moyne at the school’s 63rd commencement ceremony at the athletic complex.

Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor gave the commencement address and received an honorary degree.

Peter Major and former City of Syracuse Mayor Thomas Young both received honorary degrees as well.

In Ithaca, more than 1,600 students graduated during the school’s 118th commencement at Butterfield Stadium.

Ithaca College alum and Actor David Boreanaz, known for his roles on “Bones” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” gave the commencement address.
