Syracuse Stroll raises awareness about infant mortality

Local agencies join forces to raise awareness about infant mortality in Onondaga County.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- People around Central New York gathered at Kirk Park in Syracuse for the 3rd Annual Syracuse Stroll.

The event commemorates National Infant Mortality Awareness month.

The focus was to celebrate every child's first birthday and shed light on the high infant mortality rate in Onondaga County.

Health officials cite unsafe sleep environments as one of the highest causes of preventable deaths among our children.

"Its really important for us to get the message out that baby's need to be in their own crib without bumpers and toys, not sleeping on a couch or not sleeping with siblings, but on their back in their own crib in a safe place each and every time they take a nap or go to sleep for the night," said Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga County Health Commissioner.
