TSA misconduct on the rise, according to government report

Syracuse (WSYR-TV/CNN) – A new report highlights incidents of misconduct by TSA employees.

The list includes everything from sexual misconduct to physical fighting to abusive language, according to CNN.

There's not even a way to properly report some of the offenses, so this may be just the tip of the iceberg of some of the offenses, the cable news network noted.

A report from the Government Accountability Office indicates that more than 9,000 cases of misconduct among Transportation Security Administration employees were documented during a three-year span.

56 screeners were involved in theft, according to the report, which also indicated that more than 1,900 incidents could hurt security – such as sleeping on the job and allowing friends and family members to bypass security.

The union representing screeners says the numbers suggest the majority of screeners are doing a “great job.”

"If you look at a population the size of a small city, 56,000 people in this work force and the numbers then on an annual basis are then really, really small,” said David Borer of the American Federation of Government Employees.

Congressman John Mica, a longtime critic of the TSA, called for the audit.

“Why are there so many cases and then what is TSA doing about that? The report says they can't really get a handle on it. That raises a lot of issues,” Mica said.

The government is calling on the agency to improve how they monitor allegations of TSA misconduct and follow up after investigating.

The TSA told CNN that they are already working to implement the recommendations.
