Ithaca (WSYR-TV) – More than 20 Chihuahuas and small dogs will soon be up for adoption in Ithaca after making a cross-country trip that helped save their lives.

The dogs were scheduled for euthanasia in Los Angeles when the Tompkins County SPCA was contacted to see if it would be willing to take in the pets. The Tompkins County SPCA is a no-kill shelter.

After two months of planning, the dogs were flown to the East Coast and picked up at JFK International Airport last week. They were driven from New York City to the SPCA in Ithaca.

The SPCA will hold an adoption event Aug. 17 through Aug. 19. The agency hopes to place the dogs in new homes as soon as possible.

The dogs are Chihuahua, Terrier, and Poodle mixes. They are all under 20 pounds under seven years old.

All of the dogs have been spayed or neutered. They have had microchips and they have been vaccinated.

More information is available on the SPCA's website.
