Trees for Troops providing holiday cheer for military families

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Christmas trees from around Central New York are on their way to the military families that have made so many sacrifices.

Bob Herrmann knows first-hand what it’s like to spend Christmas away from home to serve overseas.

And that’s why the former Marine is spending the day making sure other military families aren’t forgotten – as they miss their loved ones during the holiday season.

“It's probably the worst time to be homesick. You just want to be home, it's a family oriented holiday,” Herrmann said.

More than 200 trees are being loaded up from the 3B Nursery in Elbridge as part of the national Trees for Troops Program.

The trees will be distributed to military bases in the US and overseas.

“If you miss a loved one this holiday season, it especially makes you think a little bit and just makes you want to do whatever you can to help,” said Charlie Rhoades of the Oswego County Sons of the American Legion.

Each tree contains a tag with the name of the person or organization that is donating it. Many times, they will hear back from the families that receive the trees.

"It's very rewarding when you get a letter back from the children saying how nice their house smells...they had so much fun decorating the tree,” Rhoades said.

For those volunteering their time, it’s a small gesture that they hope will make an impact for some special families.

“We have to do what we can for them. They're the ones making the sacrifice, not us,” Rhoades said.

More information about the program is available at the Trees for Troops website.
