US Supreme court listens to Prop 8 arguments

Washington DC (WSYR-TV/CNN) – The US Supreme Court today heard arguments regarding California’s Proposition 8, which bans same sex marriage in the country’s most populous state.

Same-sex couples from California are challenging the measure that was passed in 2008.

The state’s voters approved the ban.

Challengers argue the 14th Amendment guarantees “equal protection” – so defining marriage as only between a man and a woman violates their equal rights.

According to a CNN/ORC Poll conducted last weekend, the majority of Americans now support gay marriage, and more politicians – like Ohio Repbulican Senator Rob Portman – are also shifting their stance.

“My son came to Jane, my wife and I. He told us that he was gay and that launched an interesting process for me, which was kind of rethinking my position,” Portman said.

Proposition 8’s advocates say voters, not the high court, should decide gay marriage.
